Short Bio
Sarah Ettlinger is a British artist, born in Denmark and raised in London, who has made her permanent home in Athens. She graduated with distinction from Middlesex University and a 1st class degree in Art & Design from Liverpool University.
She has exhibited in Greece, England, France, Sweden and Ecuador. “Lost Innocence” (London) and “In-External contortions” (Athens) are two of her solo shows representative of her work. She holds a part-time teaching post in the Art and Design department of an International School and in 2009 she curated “Common grounds” showcasing for the first time alumni artists, architects and designers.
Sarah has been active (co-curating and participating) in a number of artist initiative projects, ―“Athens ArtCore Festival” 2020, “Supermarket Stockholm Independent Art fair” 2019, “Private View” ArtAz 2014, “ReMap II” 2009, the ground breaking “Where is the art? / Open Spaces, 2007”, parallel event to the 1st Athens Biennale.

Sarah Ettlinger favors oil painting as her chosen means of expression but does not shy away from changing her style to fit the concept of each body of work or project. .
The linking factor of her oeuvre is her curiosity to unearth layers of perceptions hidden by the façade of social consensus and preconceptions. Often, this endeavor ties closely to her own experiences as a woman and artist in Athens.
The paintings on display are taken from the series “Skyscapes” 2018-2020 which are essentially her first ever “landscapes”. The works indicate an urban setting, yet the focus within each composition is the dramatic expansive skies – uplifting, awesome, oppressive, introspective landscapes.
In contrast, her concurrent series “Home-Side” 2018-2020, spotlight details/traces of squats or street dwellings concealed under the city’s veneer and our ‘selective’ gaze. These two series interlink to provoke scrutiny and question our own emotional and spatial comfort-zones.

Η Sarah Ettlinger είναι Βρετανίδα καλλιτέχνης ―γεννήθηκε στην Δανία, μεγάλωσε στο Λονδίνο και έκανε μόνιμη κατοικία της την Αθήνα. Αποφοίτησε με διάκριση από το Πανεπιστήμιο Middlesex και πτυχίο 1ης τάξης στο γνωστικό αντικείμενο Art & Design από το Πανεπιστήμιο του Λίβερπουλ.
Έχει εκθέσει στην Ελλάδα, Αγγλία, Γαλλία, Σουηδία και Εκουαδόρ. Το “Lost Innocence” (Λονδίνο) και το “In-External contortions” (Αθήνα) είναι δύο σόλο εκθέσεις, αντιπροσωπευτικές του έργου της. Κατέχει θέση διδασκαλίας μερικής απασχόλησης στο τμήμα Τέχνης και Σχεδιασμού ενός Διεθνούς Σχολείου και το 2009 επιμελήθηκε το «Common Ground» παρουσιάζοντας για πρώτη φορά αποφοίτους καλλιτέχνες, αρχιτέκτονες και σχεδιαστές.
Η Σάρρα έχει υλοποιήσει μια σειρά καλλιτεχνικών πρωτοβουλιών (συν-επιμέλεια και συμμετοχή) ―«Athens ArtCore Festival» 2020, «Supermarket Stockholm Independent Art Fair» 2019, «Private View» ArtAz 2014, «ReMap II» 2009, και της πρωτοποριακής παράλληλης εκδήλωσης στην 1η Μπιενάλε της Αθήνας «Πού είναι η τέχνη; / Open Spaces, 2007» (Where is the Art?).
Έργο
Η Sarah Ettlinger προτιμά την ελαιογραφία ως επιλεγμένο μέσο έκφρασης, αλλά δεν διστάζει να αλλάξει το στυλ της, ώστε να συνάδει με τα νοήματα κάθε πίνακα, ή συνόλου έργων.
Παράγοντας συνάφειας του έργου της είναι η περιέργεια, η αδήριτη επιθυμία να ανακαλύψει στρώματα αισθημάτων που αποκρύπτει η πρόσοψη που επιβάλει η κοινωνική συναίνεση, ή προκαταλήψεις που διέπουν τη ζωή μας.
Συχνά, αυτή η προσπάθεια συνδέεται στενά με τις δικές της εμπειρίες ως γυναίκα και καλλιτέχνης στην Αθήνα. Οι πίνακες που εκτίθενται προέρχονται από τη σειρά “Skyscapes” 2018-2020 που ουσιαστικά αποτελούν τα πρώτα της «τοπία». Τα έργα δείχνουν ένα αστικό σκηνικό, αλλά το επίκεντρο σε κάθε σύνθεση είναι εκπληκτικοί, εκτεταμένοι και δραματικοί ουρανοί –εμπνευσμένα, καταπιεστικά, ενδοσκοπικά τοπία.
Αντίθετα, η σύγχρονη σειρά “Home-Side” 2018-2020, εστιάζει σε λεπτομέρειες ―ίχνη καταλήψεων και εγκατοικήσεων, που κρύβονται από τον καπλαμά της πόλης και το επιλεκτικό μας βλέμμα. Αυτές οι δύο σειρές έργων αλληλοσυνδέονται και προκαλούν αναστοχασμό για να αμφισβητήσουν τις δικές μας συναισθηματικές και χωρικές «ζώνες-άνεσης».
